The Virtues of
Suratul Mulk

Revealed in the blessed city of Makkah, when the Muslims were few in number and suffered immensely at the hands of the early enemies of Islãm, Surat-ul Mulk became synonymous for its lofty rank and the benefits promised by the final Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam for its daily recitation.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam states:

‘There is a Surah in the Qur’ãn consisting of 30 verses, it will intercede (on the day of Judgement) for the person who frequently recites it until he is forgiven. This surah is Surat-ul Mulk.’ (Tirmidhi)

Abu Hurayrah radhiallahu anhu states:

‘One of the Companions radhiallahu anhum of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam pitched his tent unknowingly upon a grave. He heard the sound of a person reciting Surat-ul Mulk emanating from the grave. He came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam and related the incident. Nabee sallallahu alayhi wasallam explained, “This Surah is a defender and liberator, it was liberating him from the punishment of the grave.” (Ibn Katheer)

Jãbir ibn Abdullah radhiallahu anhu relates:

‘The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wasallam would not sleep at night until he had recited Surat-us Sajdah and Surat-ul Mulk.’ (Ibn Katheer)

Ikrimah rahmatullahi alayh states:

‘Once Abdullah ibn Abbas radhiallahu anhuma asked a person: ‘Would you not like that I gave you such a gift which would bring you happiness?’ The person replied: ‘Indeed.’ Abdullah ibn Abbas radhiallahu anhuma said: ‘Continually recite Surat-ul Mulk and also teach this Surah to your family and neighbours for this Surah is a liberator, on the day of judgement it shall intercede before Allah Ta'ala for the person who was in the habit of reciting it and it will free him from Jahan’num (Hell-fire).’ (Ibn Katheer)

Imãm Ta’oos rahmatullahi alayh states:

‘Surat-us Sajdah and Surat-ul Mulk hold a rank seventy times greater than any other Surah of the Qur’ãn. (Ibn Katheer)
